How do contactless fares work on Canberra buses and light rail?

I am visiting for a few days and want to use my bank card. Do I need to buy a separate ticket, and how can I avoid an incorrect fare?

    Transport Canberra's MyWay+ system accepts eligible contactless cards and devices. Tap on and tap off with the same physical card or device each time; switching between a phone and its linked card can make the trip look incomplete.
